Detailed
Biography
Gary Tanin is a
veteran Milwaukee musician/producer/
engineer with a career
spanning decades and reflecting two central themes: music and
technology.
He was at the forefront of Internet technology and it's music
formatting
in the early 80's before many even knew of its existence.
At age 16, Tanin
had already laid the foundation for his calling. Ambitious
and business savvy, he landed a record deal with Odessa Records,
recording
his original material.
While attending the
University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, during the early
70's, Tanin apprenticed as an audio engineer at ARCO Recording Studios
where
he studied the Art and Science of audio recording and production. In
the
mid 70s he released the critically acclaimed, self-produced concept
album
"Otto & The Elevators". In the early 80's he foresaw the unique
possibility of combining newly emerging computer technology with music.
He produced dozens of artists during the 70s and 80s, continuing to
hone
his artistic and technical sensibilities.
He has had numerous
articles published in industry publications, including
the CMC Source Book and AfterTouch(tm). These special interests led to
a
collaborative effort with garageband.com co-founder Jerry Harrison (of
the
rock band Talking Heads).
This pairing
resulted in "Sublime Nation", a CD released by
MultiMusicaUSA. Dan Aloi of the (NY) Star Gazette awarded a nationally
syndicated
3-Star review of the album and stated "...veteran Milwaukee
musician-producer-engineer
Gary Tanin goes all out on "Sublime Nation." He employs top-shelf
technology to concoct this super clean-sounding album, with all-star
help
from co-producer/musician Jerry Harrison (Talking Heads)... Tanin and
Harrison
bring a sincere pop vision to the project...and the studio wizardry has
drawn (deserved) comparisons to Steely Dan."
In addition to
"Sublime Nation", Gary has released several
national and critically acclaimed CD's of his own and produced local,
national,
and international artists. Tanin's Japanese/US release, XPensive Dogs,
is
an intercontinental fusion of east and west; a true multi-cultural
tour-de-force.
Gary and his Japanese collaborator, Toshi Hiraoka, created an
intriguing
mix of Tokyo Techno-Pop with rock-hard vocal harmonies.
Radio MARAB,
Germany comments on Xpensive Dogs: "Combines drivin',
funky HC influence, super cool vocals 'n speedin' guitars - excellent,
can't
wait to hear more!" Cambridge (England) University Radio writes, "The
Dogs combine breakneck poly-rhythms, quirky
guitar lines that
spiral off all over the shop, wild squeaky synths, chunks of sound...
XPensive
Dogs are both innovative and excellent..." and a Static Zine, USA
review states "I can compare them to no one, with the exception
of a hint of Zappa here & there. Unique & intelligent with some
great hooks... Loved it! A+"
A follow-up to
XPensive Dogs, entitled "DOG EAT DOG", was released in 2004. Japanese
label Hard Disc International continues
Asian
promotion of "XPensive Dogs" and "Sublime Nation" recently
celebrated its Japanese debut on Muse Enterprise's Mouse
Records imprint. Tanin's entire catalog is being distributed
in the US by RockIt Records (USA).
Gary Tanin is a
world-class producer/engineer, producing for bands like
the BoDeans, Monovox, and Sammy Llanas' Absinthe and mastering for the
likes
of ex-Violent Femme, Victor DeLorenzo, Pancake Day (ALMO/Geffen), and
Daryl
Stuermer (of Phil Collins and Genesis fame).
